When you plumb what is real and deep within you, it gets bigger. It grows. If what you are doing to support yourself is something that is meaningful to you, you become a stronger and better person. The act of selling your soul - that stuff that springs from the most creative and wild place within you is liberating. For that is the calling that people speak of when they speak of a calling for a religious vocation. It is considered to be a calling as it means dedicating your life, your soul to a purpose. And of course the ideal is that you will feel your purpose from deep within yourself, although it can sometimes take an entire lifetime of knocking about to discover what this purpose is, what it is that involves your mind, heart and spirit most deeply, and is therefore most deeply satisfying. It is that activity that you cannot wait to begin when you get up in the morning, the one that cries out to you, Come to me, and that you would happily drop everything else in order to accomplish.
The true nerd, happily exploring the universe with his ideas and equations, forgetting how to dress and keep his house is among those blessed people who has found his soul’s home. The writer or the artist, who stands impatiently at the sink, finishing up the dishes from the night before so that she can continue her reflections in words, or paint, or clay is also among these people.
When we come back nourished from having explored our depths, we have more to give the world around us. And when we can use the product of those explorations as our means of support within the world, keeping ourselves fed, housed and clothed by doing those things that are most meaningful to us, then we are truly blessed. For the cycles of day and night, the seasons changing round and round, become entwined with our rest, relaxation and work, And we are able to find our place within the vast march of humanity in this moment - now - to the shores of eternity.
The act of selling our souls is not as some people might think, a demeaning occupation, it is a path to growth and enlightenment. So, do not be afraid to promote what you have produced out of the love of producing it.
